Our golf club boasts a vibrant junior membership, thanks to our dedicated Pro Shop staff and the club members who come out to help out with golf instruction and etiquette.  The cost for this program is very low, especially considering the number and variety of lessons and playing events which our junior members enjoy.  Anyone interested in the Junior Program is invited to pick up a hand-out describing the program and its goals and requirements from the Pro Shop.

We are very proud of the fact that our Assistant Pro, Brian Rands, was honoured by the BCPGA in 2006, being named Junior Developer of the Year.  He is assisted by many of our members, and the program enjoys great sponsorship from a number of businesses in town.

Junior Program Summary

• the Junior Program is open to any Junior boy or girl aged 10-18 who is a member at the Alberni Golf Club

• the Junior Program runs from late May to late August, 2008

• the annual Junior membership is $200

• there may be additional costs for tournaments, interclubs, and special events (participation in these events is optional)

• Juniors have access to the golf course anytime EXCEPT Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings.  Juniors may play after 11 a.m. on these days

• tee-times are made through the Pro Shop by phoning 723-5422, or in person with the Pro Shop staff.  Remember, courtesy and politeness begins here and carries on throughout the clubhouse and golf course

• if you cannot make your tee-time, phone the Pro Shop and tell us

Over the years, our junior program has produced some fine golfers who have gone on to earn golf scholarships or take up a career in the golf industry.  Some of these talented former Alberni juniors are Chris Herkel, Lenny Cyr, David Turner, and Christina Spence.  The latest junior to earn a golf scholarship is Alyssa Herkel, currently studying and playing golf at the University of Victoria.

Our Thursday Men’s Nights offer a great opportunity for beginners and experts alike to have some fun playing a variety of team events.  Our kitchen staff serves up hearty meals afterwards, and chances are you’ll go home with a prize too.  If you like to enjoy your favourite beverage in the open air, our deck is definitely the place to be; now that we have propane heaters, you can party on well into the evening hours.

Since these events are scrambles, please remember to arrive at the club in time to sign in and make your way out to your starting hole in time for the shotgun start.

On Tuesday mornings, female members and guests are up bright and early to play with the ladies of either the nine or the eighteen hole division.  There are various weekly competitions and winners go home with bragging rights and sometimes a small prize.

The ladies' captains work hard to get their foursomes and matches lined up ahead of time, so please contact the pro shop (723-5422) if you'd like to join them for any of the events listed below.

Business Ladies’ Scrambles

Don’t let the name scare you away: all female golfers are invited to play in all of our Business Ladies’ events.

On regular play days, members and non-members alike can drop in any Tuesday from mid-afternoon on and head out for nine holes of golf.  A dollar a week entitles you to compete for year-end prizes for low gross average, low net average, most birdies, best attendance, and so on.  Each week there are two chances to win KP (closest to the pin) honours, and each time you have a KP you are automatically entered in the year-end chipping contest.  Wonderful  prizes and gift certificates make the year-end shoot out one of our most sought-after titles, so you’ll want to play regularly to give yourself the most chances to win.

Once a month through our regular season, the Business Ladies hold a scramble.  These are very popular events which feature 9 holes of scramble-style golf and great food.  Best of all, everyone is guaranteed a prize!

Twice a month, our guys and girls team up for a night of scramble-style golf, dinner, and prizes.  You can sign up as a couple or as an individual, and non-members are welcome.  If having fun and meeting new people appeals to you, mixer nights are a must!
